Description

This trial was conducted by ATISC to identify any large differences in seed quality between newer older lodgepole pine cones. This included germination tests on fresh seed and also estimates of storage times and use for seeding by performing artificial ageing tests. The results may be used to support the alteration of lodgepole pine cone collection practices in the future and help to ensure higher quality seed lots going forward, resulting in longer use times and lower costs to industry.

The Alberta Tree Improvement & Seed Centre conducted a germination trial to provide statistically sound evidence and determine any significant effects of stratification treatments on final seedling numbers, germination rates or vigour for lodgepole pine, jack pine and their hybrid populations. The goal is to provide data to support generalized recommended method(s) for each or both species so nurseries can make an informed choice in their future sowing protocols to help maximize seedling production and minimize seed use and cost to seed owners.

These results will assist nursery schedule managers in choosing whether or not to skip long soak times due to staffing, imminent holidays, high workloads, last-minute orders, etc. without the worry of sacrificing germination speed, seedling quantity or quality when producing reforestation seedlings for Alberta public land.
