Description

The purpose of this report is to chronicle the baseline soil features of the Mundare (04-AB) Benchmark Site, thereby providing a technical reference document in support of on-going monitoring research and reporting. The Mundare site is one of 23 benchmark-monitoring sites established across Canada by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to collect baseline data to monitor trends in soil quality. It represents Black soils of the Aspen Parkland Ecoregion. The landscape is representative of the undulating to ridged and hummocky morainal terrain that is common in central Alberta.

Description

The purpose of this report is to chronicle the baseline soil features of the Bow Island (06-AB) Benchmark Site, thereby providing a technical reference document in support of on-going monitoring research and reporting. The Bow Island site is one of 23 benchmark-monitoring sites established across Canada by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to collect baseline data to monitor trends in soil quality. It represents irrigated Brown soils of the Mixed Grassland ecoregion. The landscape is representative of the gently undulating, morainal terrain (with lacustrine veneer) that is common in southeastern Alberta.

Description

The purpose of this report is to chronicle the baseline soil features of the Falher (03-AB) Benchmark Site, thereby providing a technical reference document in support of on-going monitoring research and reporting. The Falher site is one of 23 benchmark-monitoring sites established across Canada by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to collect baseline data to monitor trends in soil quality. It represents Dark Gray soils of the Peace Lowland Ecoregion. The landscape is representative of the level glaciolacustrine terrain common to the southeastern portion of the Peace River agricultural region.

Description

The purpose of this report is to chronicle the baseline soil features of the Provost (05-AB) Benchmark Site, thereby providing a technical reference document in support of on-going monitoring research and reporting. The Provost site is one of 23 benchmark-monitoring sites established across Canada by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to collect baseline data to monitor trends in soil quality. It represents the northern belt of Dark Brown soils that occur in the Prairie - Parkland Transition, also called Aspen Groveland. The landscape is representative of the relatively rough, hummocky to undulating, morainal terrain that is common through east-central Alberta and west-central Saskatchewan.

Description

This report and the accompanying maps summarize the results of the soil survey of the County of Flagstaff in the Eastern Alberta Plains physiographic region of east-central Alberta. Most of the county is characterized by nearly-level to gently-undulating topography with deranged drainage and numerous small depressions and sloughs. Steeper topography occurs in the eastern third of the county in areas of hummocky moraine and incised meltwater scour channels.

Description

Soil erosion has been long been recognized as a potential problem in Alberta. Prior to this study, focus had been mainly on soil erosion caused by wind. This study looks at water erosion in Alberta, and investigates the use of Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) as a method for assessing water erosion. This report describes the adaptation of USLE factors to Alberta conditions. A major modification was made to the precipitation component to recognize the contribution of spring snow melt.

The development of this inventory was undertaken at the request of Parks Canada to provide a map of landforms, soils and vegetation to facilitate their land management decisions. The report provides a brief introduction to the natural history of Yoho National Park and then discusses the methodology used to prepare the maps included in the report. The map unit descriptions comprise the bulk of the report and provide a detailed description of the map units outlined in the legend.
