Description

Whether to see their friends and relatives, for business, or for pleasure, 19.6 million person-visits were made in 2006 to destinations in Alberta by residents of Alberta, other Canadians, visitors from the United States, and overseas visitors (same day and overnight trips for Alberta and other Canada, and overnight trips for the U.S. and overseas). To better understand the size and characteristics of these visitors, Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation commissioned Research Resolutions & Consulting to prepare a special analyses of the 2006 Travel Survey of Residents of Canada (TSRC) and the International Travel Survey (ITS) that are both conducted by Statistics Canada. These consumer surveys provide tourism information for travel in Alberta by Canadians and trips to the province made by U.S. and overseas visitors. This summary highlights key findings only. Description

Three wildland provincial parks and one ecological reserve have been established in the northeast corner of Alberta. Colin-Cornwall Lakes, Fidler-Greywillow and La Butte Creek Wildland Provincial Parks are located in the Canadian Shield Natural Region. Egg Island Ecological Reserve, within Lake Athabasca, is also located in that Natural Region (Alberta Environmental Protection 1998). Note that Fidler-Greywillow is comprised of a strip of mainland plus some islands in Lake Athabasca. These protected areas contain numerous and important examples of Alberta's biodiversity. Much of it is poorly understood or unknown, particularly the invertebrate fauna. The spider fauna is no exception. The spider specimens that were collected in Colin-Cornwall Lakes Wildland Provincial Park during this survey were the first for this area.

Trapping is a traditional activity that reflects cultural and aboriginal lifestyles, which Alberta Community Development (CD) wishes to support. A number of Registered Fur Management Areas (RFMA) were included within parks and protected areas designated or expanded between 1995 and 2001. Commitments to trappers in these areas will be honoured. In addition to the Wildlife Act and its regulations, the Provincial Parks Act and its regulations and the Wilderness Areas, Ecological Reserves and Natural Areas Act, fur trapping in Alberta's Parks and Protected Areas will also be managed pursuant to this policy. The intent of this policy is to ensure an appropriate balance is maintained between fur trapping and the public's desire for opportunities to view wildlife in a natural and safe setting and to make trapping operations as similar as possible between parks and protected areas and general Crown land. Fur trapping in this policy means the trapping or hunting of fur-bearing animals...
