The proposal is for expansion of the Coal Valley Mine to allow mining in the Robb Trend area, located within Yellowhead County in proximity to the community of Robb. Alberta Environment and Water (AEW) monitors the surface water quality of provincial lakes to evaluate short- and long-term environmental conditions, and to inform lake management and policy. The objectives of the study were to: 1) review AEW provincial water quality database and select lakes with long-term data suitable for statistical trend analysis; 2) provide and overview of water quality conditions and long-term trends in lakes; and 3) investigate the influences of water management and lake level on water quality.

Description

Long term soil acidification monitoring was initiated by Alberta Environment in 1981 to track potential effects of acidic atmospheric deposition on soils in Alberta. Two sites per year were established for a total of eight sites, with baseline sampling completed in 1984. The sites were established each fall at eight locations in the province, as follows: Fort McMurray, Cold Lake, High Prairie, Bruderheim, Devon, Rocky Mountain House, Esther and Twin Butte. In 2008, a ninth site was added in the Fort Saskatchewan Industrial Heartland area in order to provide a better assessment of acidification impacts from major industrial development and oil sands bitumen upgraders proposed for a region. This report presents the data and statistical analysis of six or seven monitoring events up to 2010.

This protocol specifically quantifies greenhouse gas emissions reductions from the following three activities: new carbon stored annually in agricultural soil; lower nitrous oxide emissions from soils under no till management; and associated emission reductions from reduced fossil fuel use from fewer passes per farm field. This quantification protocol is written for project developers and farm operators implementing conservation cropping offset projects in the Dry Prairie and Parkland ecozones. NOTE: Per section 6(2) of the Standard for Greenhouse Gas Emission Offset Project Developers, the prescribed duration of the offset crediting period for existing emission offset projects using the protocol ends December 31, 2021.
