The GoA is committed to a vision of a vibrant and prosperous province where Albertans enjoy a superior quality of life and are confidence about the future for themselves and their children. Safe and adequate supplies of water, clean air and land, together with healthy, dynamic communities are the foundations of a high quality of life. All Albertans share responsibility for stewardship of the environment and the responsible use of our natural resources. As part of its mandate, Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development is responsible for working with Albertans to ensure that environmental quality is maintained and that natural resources are used responsibly.

This wildlife status report looks at the plains spadefoot is currently on Alberta's 'blue list' of species that may be at risk of declining to non-viable population levels in the province. This nocturnal toad spends most of its time underground, only emerging to breed during fabourable conditions or to feed. Observational records are therefore rare. This report reviews information on the plains spadefoot in Alberta, as a step in updating its status in the province. It is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

Water quality in the North Saskatchewan River is monitored for the Prairie Provinces Water Board (PPWB) at the Alberta-Saskatchewan border. Occasional exceedences of PPWB objectives for copper, fecal coliform bacteria, zinc and lead prompted an investigation into sources that may contribute to these high concentrations. Historical water quality data are available for point sources and the river in the urban area, but little is known about the contribution of the creeks and point sources discharging to the river along the last 100 km of river before it reaches the border.
