Alberta Envrionmental Protection has intensively monitored the Bow River ecosystem since 1989. This work was designed to determine the distribution of contaminants from the Canada Creosote site in the aquatic ecosystem, to protect domestic water supplies and to ensure the human consumption of fish was safe. This report evaluates changes in water quality over the two years since the containment system was intalled.

Once abundant over most of the prairie regions of the United States and Canada, populations have declined throughout most of the its breeding range since the early 1900s as a result of both overhunting and habitat loss. It is currently on the list of species that may be at risk of declining to nonviable population levels in Alberta. This report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.
