Description

Wildhay Glacial Cascades Natural Area was officially established on December 20, 2000. This natural area covers approximately 25 square kilometres (1,233 hectares) preserving a special part of Alberta’s natural heritage within the Foothills Natural Region. Natural areas protect special and sensitive landscapes of local and regional significance while providing opportunities for education, nature appreciation and low intensity recreation. Wildhay Glacial Cascades Natural Area is an excellent example of an upper foothills river valley. The name given to this site signifies the role glacier meltwaters have played in creating the rolling terrain found here.

Pinto Creek Canyon Natural Area was officially established on December 20, 2000. This natural area covers 12.32 square kilometres (1,233 hectares) preserving a special part of Alberta’s natural heritage within the Foothills Natural Region. Pinto Creek Canyon Natural Area is home to Alberta’s only population of mountain goats outside of the Rocky Mountain Natural Region.

Fickle Lake Provincial Recreation Area (PRA) was expanded by over ten square kilometres (1,152 hectares) to include the entire lake and adjacent uplands. Now 11.52 square kilometres (1,152 hectares), this PRA is situated in the lower foothills, southwest of Edson. A PRA supports a wide variety of recreational pursuits, and contributes to the preservation goal of Alberta's parks and protected areas network.

Rock Lake-Solomon Creek Wildland Park is located northwest of Hinton and extends from the Athabasca River in the south to Rock Lake Provincial Recreation Area (PRA) and Willmore Wilderness to the northwest. You can reach the south end of the park along Solomon Creek by taking the road to the hamlet of Brule. The access to Rock Lake PRA is 70 kilometres north of Hinton. A 32 km graveled road leaves Highway 40 and winds along a route used by the petroleum and forest industries. Use caution when traveling this road and be aware that the road is not regularly maintained.
