In spring 2005, the Minister of Children's Services requested a review of the Family and Community Support Services Program to identify program strengths and opportunities and explore possible strategies and means of improving collaboration and efficiency between FCSS and Child and Family Services Authorities. The review also looked at the unique challenges of rural FCSS programs, as well as the accountability of FCSS programs and their ability to use their partnerships and connection in the community to leverage additional funds.

The purpose of this report is to allow individuals the opportunity to view a comprehensive report on current mentoring research. This report has been shared with participating Alberta Children and Youth Initiative ministries as part of identifying current government support for mentoring and to assist with development of an integrated strategy to support mentoring of children and youth in Alberta. The positive outcomes of mentoring are increasingly being recognized, and mentoring programs continue to expand.

Description

The purpose of this survey was to collect baseline information on public attitudes toward family violence in Alberta. The province-wide telephone survey was designed in large part on a survey instrument previously used to collect similar opinions on a national scope in 2002, which allows for an examination of differences in opinions over time. The study included a broad range of issues, including: public understanding and awareness of family violence; levels of tolerance for family violence; behavioural intentions with respect to family violence; support for various ways to deal with family violence; public awareness of bullying; and, levels of concern about children’s exposure to violence in their daily lives.

This report presents the findings of the Protection of Children Involved in Prostitution (PChIP) Protective Safe House Review. Summarized in the Executive Summary are the research methods, major research findings, conclusions and recommendations. The Protection of Children Involved in Prostitution (PChIP) Act was enacted in Alberta in 1999 and recognizes that children involved in prostitution are victims of child sexual abuse and require protection. Under the PChIP Act, police or a director of child welfare may apprehend and confine children involved in or at risk of involvement in prostitution in a Protective Safe House for their protection and safety. In March 2001, the legislation was amended to enhance the protection offered to children and ensure their legal rights are safeguarded. In 1998-1999, the FCSS Association of Alberta conducted a research project to learn the experiences of Family and Community Support Services programs in working with others. As a result of this research, a set of six papers were released in the Working Together series. This paper, the fourth in the series, discusses how FCSS can work in cooperation with local agencies and community groups to enhance the social well-being of individuals and families through promotion or intervention strategies provided at the earliest opportunity.
