Description

The first clue to the presence of possible diamond-bearing source rocks in northern Alberta was the discovery of a perfect octahedral diamond, estimated at about 0.83 carats in weight, by farm worker Einar Opdahl during 1958 in the Evansburg area of west-central Alberta. Since the Opdahl diamond, no new diamond finds were reported in northern Alberta until the 1990s, when several occurrences of alluvial diamond and diamondiferous kimberlite were discovered.

This data comprises the polygon features from AGS Map 207, 'Quaternary Geology, Southern Alberta', compiled by I. Shetsen. Field work was conducted between 1981 and 1983, and the map was published in 1987 at 1:500,000 scale. The dataset covers an area between Townships 1 and 36 and Ranges 1 west of the 4th Meridian to Range 7 west of the 5th Meridian. See AGS Map 207 for data sources used in the compilation.

This GIS dataset is one of a collection of shapefiles representing part of Chapter 7 of the Atlas, Paleographic Evolution of the Cratonic Platform - Cambrian to Triassic, Figure 13, Permian (PT1) Paleogeography. Shapefiles were produced from archived digital files created by the Alberta Geological Survey in the mid-1990s, and edited in 2005-06 to correct, attribute and consolidate the data into single files by feature type and by figure.
