The proposal is to develop additional coal reserves adjacent to existing mining operations in Coal Valley in Yellowhead County. The proposed Mercoal West Mine Project would produce 7.2 million tonnes of processed coal and be located northwest of the community of Mercoal. The Yellowhead Tower Mine Project would produce 6.0 million tonnes of processed coal and be located northwest of the community of Coalspur. The EIA was deemed complete in 2009. The land management decision is a refinement of the 1990 Coal Branch Sub-Regional Integrated Resource Plan and provides greater provincial land and resource management direction for municipal area structure planning. The coordination of commercial recreation and tourism activities within designated nodes addresses orderly development within the West Yellowhead Corridor in an effort to maintain the natural values of the area that are the foundation of recreation experiences.

Description

This study delineates flood hazard areas and determines design flood levels for Athabasca River and Happy, Hardisty and Maskuta Creeks through Hinton. The study area includes an almost 10 km reach of the Athabasca River, an almost 4 km reach of Hardisty Creek and less than 1 km reaches of both Happy and Maskuta Creeks. The design discharge for the Athabasca River is 1390 m³/s. The design discharges for Happy, Hardisty and Maskuta Creeks are 33.2 m³/s, 10.6 m³/s and 134 m³/s respectively. The study was prepared in May 1994. Flood information available after study completion may not be reflected in the current flood hazard study report or flood hazard mapping.
