Description

This wildlife status report looks at the Ord's kangaroo rat, a medium-sized, nocturnal rodent adapted for survival in arid environments. The species is widespread in western North America, but reaches the northern edge of its range in southeastern Alberta and southwestern Saskatchewan. There, it inhabits sparsely-vegetated habitats with loose, sandy soils. These habitats are uncommon and fragmented within the Canadian range. The Ord's kangaroo rat is included on the list of species which may be at risk in Alberta because of their localized distribution and specific habitat requirements.
