Two workers were off loading grain when at some point one worker had entered the truck trailer and was engulfed by grain. The other worker took emergency measures to extricate the trapped worker, but the worker was pronounced deceased at hospital.

The seed was used for lawns, fairways, pastures and soil conservation purposes. Markets for creeping red fescue seed expanded as the need arose for a turf-forming grass to seed on airfields and around military bases.

Description

Although the Alberta Agriculture Research Farm in Fairview has been in existence for over ten years, an annual report had not been published for a number of years. With the expansion of projects on the site and the need to make this information more available to producers and other researchers, this annual report has been compiled. The research farm now carries out over 50 projects, many of which are ongoing. Projects involve both applied research and field demonstration trials. The number of participants in research projects has grown, as well as the research farm itself. Projects cover all the major crops, including wheat, barley, canola, field peas, special crops and forages. In addition, soils and crop rotation remain a major research focus area. The research farm will also begin expanding into water quality projects in the near future.

Description

The purpose of this report is to chronicle the baseline soil features of the Falher (03-AB) Benchmark Site, thereby providing a technical reference document in support of on-going monitoring research and reporting. The Falher site is one of 23 benchmark-monitoring sites established across Canada by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to collect baseline data to monitor trends in soil quality. It represents Dark Gray soils of the Peace Lowland Ecoregion. The landscape is representative of the level glaciolacustrine terrain common to the southeastern portion of the Peace River agricultural region.

Description

In past years, black bear have caused considerable damage in beeyards in the Peace River region of Alberta. Bear damage in beeyards has varied between $50,000 and $200,000 per year. Since 1973, Alberta Agriculture had paid a subsidy to beekeepers for constructing electric fences around beeyards. This fencing program has greatly reduced bear damage. However, our data indicate that black bears penetrated electric fences during 19 percent of the bear visits. To alleviate damage these offending individuals were foot snared and shot or translocated. Approximately 600 bears have been captured at beeyards by government personnel since 1972. In addition several hundred bears have been removed by beekeepers during the same period.
