Description

Wind energy projects must be appropriately sited and well planned to avoid or minimize bat mortalities. The sites chosen for wind power developments due to favourable local meteorological conditions also appear to coincide with bat migration corridors, with turbine heights and numbers playing a significant role in bat fatalities. High rates of bat mortalities are concerning as bats are relative long-lived with low reproductive output rates, and the majority of bats killed by turbines tend to be reproductive adults.

Trumpeter swans are listed as a Threatened species under Alberta's Wildlife Act, and as such are afforded protection against hunting and the destruction of nests. The population of trumpeter swans in Alberta is increasing, but very small. This document outlines industrial-land-use guidelines that have been established in an effort to continue the recovery of trumpeter swans.

While it is a source of renewable clean energy, wind power does have environmental impacts. Wind farms have an effect on the landscape, are a cause of bird and bat mortality, and can also result in wildlife disturbance and habitat degradation. Wind energy projects, like other development projects with potential environmental impact, need to be well planned in order to avoid or mitigate these impacts. This document summarizes potential wildlife issues associated with new wind energy developments in Alberta, and provides guidelines for minimizing impacts of such projects on wildlife.
