The purpose of the project was to determine if widespread adoption of agricultural beneficial management practices would improve water quality at the watershed scale, and to develop the Alberta Phosphorus Management Tool as a means to identify highest risks for phosphorous loss. Results are presented in a detailed technical science report and an overview and key findings fact sheet.

Alberta's 13 irrigation districts contain more than 55 reservoirs and approximately 8,000 km of conveyance works, including canals and pipelines. Good quality irrigation water is needed for all uses of the water: agricultural production, municipal water supply, wildlife habitat, and numerous recreational activities such as fishing, camping, and golfing. A five-year study (2011 to 2015) was conducted to assess the quality of irrigation water in these districts. This report summarizes activities and findings of the 2014 sampling season.

The objective of this report is to show how the decisions and choices made throughout the pilot align with generally-accepted offset principles as described by the Business and Biodiversity Offset Programme and generally-accepted offset practices.
