Alberta’s Personal Information Protection Act, which came into force on January 1, 2004, requires every organization to designate an individual to be responsible for the organization’s compliance with the Act. The Act also requires organizations to develop and follow reasonable personal information protection policies and practices to enable them to comply with the Act.

The Personal Information Protection Act came into force on January 1, 2004. These guidelines are an administrative tool intended to assist professional regulatory organizations that wish to develop a personal information code. It is not intended as, nor is it a substitute for, legal advice. For the exact wording and interpretation of PIPA, please read the Act and its regulation in their entirety.
