Gasfitters were working in a new home under construction when an explosion occurred. Three workers were transported to hospital. One worker passed away due to injuries. Presents the findings of an investigation into a workplace fatality in the mining and petroleum development sector that occurred in January, 2013. Two pilot truck operators were piloting a rig equipment move. When pulling out of a gas station, one of the operators became entangled in the back end of one of the vehicles and was dragged approximately 200 metres out onto the highway, where he was freed from the jeep, and subsequently died from traumatic injuries. A machinist was using a lathe to fabricate a spacer needed for changing out struts on haul trucks when his glove and coveralls become entangled in the rotating spacer. The machinist was taken to the hospital in Fort McMurray and later transported to hospital in Edmonton, where he later died. These penalties aim to encourage improved compliance with health and safety regulations, and are meant to work as a persuasive deterrent against those who demonstrate a chronic disregard for health and safety in the workplace. Administrative penalties came into effect October 1, 2013.
