Industries that rely on skilled tradespeople often need to source international employees if the local labour market cannot meet their needs. All efforts should be made to hire Albertans and Canadians first, but if you are unable to hire locally, this guide gives you an overview of how to hire internationally trained tradespeople. Presents the findings of an investigation into a workplace fatality in the mining and petroleum development sector that occurred in July, 2013. An apprentice heavy duty mechanic was working to troubleshoot lights on a vibrating drum packer. The mechanic fell out of the packer while exiting. When he fell, the packer moved forward and the rear left tire ran over the mechanic, causing fatal injuries. Description

The First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) Workforce Planning Initiative was launched in 2008. Over an 18-month period, the four-member MLA Committee which was appointed led an engagement process that included government-to-government meetings with First Nations and Métis leaders; urban Aboriginal dialogues; and meetings with educational institutions, training providers, service delivery, community and economic development organizations, other levels of government, employers, and industry. The focus of the engagement was increasing the participation of Aboriginal people in Alberta’s work force and economy. From all the discussions, input and information gathered the Committee has made 30 recommendations, which are included in this report.
