This interim report highlights the work and impact of various projects funded through the Alberta Healthy School Community Wellness Fund. The objective of the Wellness Fund is to enhance the health and well-being of school-aged children and youth within Alberta school communities by supporting projects which address healthy eating, active living and positive social environments using a comprehensive school health approach.

The objective of the Alberta Healthy School Community Wellness Fund is to enhance the health and wellbeing of school-aged children and youth within Alberta school communities through support of school community projects which address healthy eating, active living and positive social environments using a comprehensive school health approach. This handbook is intended to support the development of healthy school communities through a process which promotes a culture of wellness for all stakeholders.

This report begins with an overview of 102 projects funded since the inception of the Wellness Fund in 2007. Both financial growth and reach within Albertan school communities is described. A grant from Alberta Education enabled a more detailed examination of data collected from Wellness Fund projects funded during the 2009/10 reporting year as well as supported additional projects during 2010/11. Results from 2009/10 pertain to 61 projects that span 395 schools and 139,781 students ranging from kindergarten to Grade 12. The results of projects funded in 2010/11 will be collected by July 2011 and included in a subsequent final report.

Because many meals and snacks are consumed outside the home, it is important to ensure that children and youth are able to access healthy food choices wherever they go. Many of these eating occasions will occur in childcare facilities, schools, recreational facilities and community centres. The goal of these guidelines is to equip facilities and organizations with the tools they need to provide healthy food choices in childcare settings, schools, in recreation centres, at special events, and in the community at large.
