To better understand the climate of sexual and gender-based violence experienced by post-secondary students in Alberta, the Campus Climate Survey on Sexual and Gender-based Violence commissioned a survey across 26 publicly-funded Alberta post-secondary institutions. A January 2015 decision of the Supreme Court of Canada recognized a Charter-protected right to strike when collective agreement negotiations break down, while also acknowledging that many employees in the public sector provide essential services and the maintenance of these essential public services during a work stoppage is a proper concern for governments and public sector employers. In September 2015, Jobs, Skills, Training and Labour initiated a focused consultation process to gather feedback around an alternative approach to dispute resolution for those parts of the broad public sector subject to compulsory arbitration and not permitted to strike and lockout. This resource presents the results of this consultation.

A January 2015 decision of the Supreme Court of Canada recognized a Charter-protected right to strike when collective agreement negotiations break down. This decision led the Government of Alberta to re-evaluate the compulsory interest arbitration provisions in the Post-secondary Learning Act and the Regulation. In October and November 2015, Advanced Education consulted with academic staff associations, graduate student associations, non-academic staff associations, and public post-secondary institutions on how to go about implementing the right to strike. This resource presents the results of this consultation.

In response to a need identified by post-secondary education stakeholders for structure, guidance, and standardized processes for prior learning assessment and recognition (PLAR), Alberta Advanced Education and Technology (AET) released Advancing PLAR in Alberta: an Action Plan in October 2008 (hereafter referred to as the PLAR Action Plan). With the intention of initiating and setting the stage for the implementation of the action plan, the PLAR manager met with key stakeholders in Alberta’s publicly funded post-secondary institutions to conduct an informal environmental scan.
