The activities found in this booklet will take you on some explorations of animals and their signs. Glance through the booklet before you start, and choose the activities which interest you. They do not have to be done in order. Two booklets are included in this Discovery Pack: a Take-home booklet and this Activity booklet. Feel free to keep the Take-home booklet so that you can discover which animals live near your home.

This program has been developed through the leadership of the Fish Creek Environmental Learning Centre in Fish Creek Provincial Park. The “Nature of Science” program has been designed to be conducted within any natural area in Alberta. Three different versions of this teacher-directed program (Appendix A) have been developed in Fish Creek Provincial Park, at designated sites in Kananaskis Country and across Alberta.

This publication is part of a series of field study programs produced by the Environmental Education Program of Parks and Protected Areas in Kananaskis Country and Fish Creek Provincial Park. These publications have been written to address the goals of Alberta Community Development and increase students’ environmental awareness, understanding, interaction, and responsibility for the natural world in which they live. The publications are developed in a close working relationship with teachers, community educators and program writers. Programs focus on the areas of environmental education, science, social studies, and language arts. They are also developed to emphasize elements of environmental literacy, lifestyle, and citizenship.

Beneath the calm surface, aquatic animals lurk in the depths of an action-packed world full of chase and escape, ambush and evasion. The activities in this booklet will help you to explore the homes and habits of the aquatic animals that live in Kananaskis Country. Description

The program Our World - A Special Place has been designed to allow students to use their senses in an exploration of the natural environment. In the classroom, students discover how useful their five senses are by listening to a story about the senses. Students then focus on a special place of their own and use their sensory recollection of the place to describe it either verbally or by drawing a picture. The in-class exploration is followed by a field study of Planet "E", where the students use their senses and observation skills to explore an outdoor setting. As observation skills are sharpened, the participants have an opportunity to gain a greater awareness of how interesting the world is.
