Description

Starting in December 2009, the Minister of Alberta Culture and Community Spirit hosted a series of meetings in six communities across the province with the arts sector, to identify challenges and opportunities where the government and the arts sector could work together to support healthy and vibrant communities. In the Fall of 2010, the Minister returned to each of the six communities he visited previously, as well as two new communities. This report is a summary of what was heard and the solutions both Alberta Culture and Community Spirit and the sector are currently engaged in. Also included are new actions Alberta Culture and Community Spirit is undertaking as a result of the dialogues. The report is arranged based upon the key themes that emerged.

This summary presents grants awarded to screen-based media (film, television and digital media) production companies through the Alberta Multimedia Development Fund (AMDF). The AMDF provides assistance to motion picture production done in Alberta to partially reimburse expenses incurred in the course of creating screen-based content in Alberta. This assistance is provided through the following five funding programs: Alberta Production Program (APP); Project/Script Development Program; Alberta Stories Program; Export Market Development Program; Training and Mentorship Program.

Between December 16, 2009, and February 26, 2010, the Honourable Lindsay Blackett, Minister of Culture and Community Spirit engaged in a dialogue with the arts sector in Alberta. Six regional dialogue meetings were conducted in Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Lethbridge, Calgary, Red Deer and Edmonton. An online dialogue was hosted on the Culture and Community Spirit website to enable access to individuals who wished to have input but were not able to participate in the regional dialogues. The purpose of the dialogue was to identify challenges and opportunities for government and the sector to work better together to help support healthy and vibrant communities.

In February of 2009, Alberta Culture and Community Spirit undertook a strategic overview of cultural facilities across the province in order to ascertain the state of activity in cultural facilities planning, and to identify current trends and projects in development. To supplement this work, the Honourable Lindsay Blackett, Minister of Culture and Community Spirit, hosted a series of regional dialogues in June 2009 aimed at gathering information, understanding diverse perspectives and identifying community needs related to cultural infrastructure. Results from the dialogues will assist the department in developing a comprehensive plan for maintaining existing inventory in the province, while deploying resources for new facilities in a visionary and innovative fashion. A total of 162 individuals attended six dialogues, held in various regions of the province. Based on extensive research and public consultation, the Spirit of Alberta policy reflects the broad view of Albertan culture, encompassing the arts, our heritage, natural landscapes and recreation. The policy is focused around four keystones: access; capacity; excellence; and growth of cultural industries.
