Results are subject to change based on differences in reporting schedules and updates from the various data systems. The surveillance report was replaced by the Alberta Surveillance Substance Use System in December 2020.

Typically, the need for assessment and remediation will be triggered by law enforcement or another regulatory agency.

The purpose of the review was to learn more about the people dying from opioid-related deaths and the circumstances of those deaths, and to identify trends and inform potential interventions to help stem the increasing number of opioid-related deaths in Alberta.

In June 2018 the Office of the Child and Youth Advocate released an investigative review examining the lives of twelve youth who died from opioid poisoning between October 2015 and September 2017. The review identified opportunities for system improvements in five areas, with five corresponding recommendations. All five recommendations have been accepted by the Government of Alberta, as outlined in this document.
