Description

The Ambulatory Care Classification System (ACCS) was developed to create a fully integrated ambulatory care patient classification system for acute care facilities. The data collected using ACCS provides useful information for utilization analyses and management, for both hospitals and the provincial government. Consistent and accurate collection of these data elements is integral to resource allocation through the population based funding formula. This manual is intended to outline reporting requirements for Regional Health Authorities (RHAs) collecting the Alberta Ambulatory Care Minimum Data Set. In addition to the data elements, a fairly extensive listing of coding standards and reporting examples are provided.

Description

The Alberta Ambulatory Care Reporting System and the accompanying Ambulatory Care Classification System (ACCS) were implemented in April 1997. ACCS is a comprehensive patient classification system encompassing emergency, procedure, clinic, and investigative technology visits. The data collected through the report system has provided Alberta Health and Wellness and the Regional Health Authorities with a rational mechanism for quantifying and allocating funds for ambulatory care services. The data is also used for planning, trend analyses, and establishing performance indicators. An ambulatory care re-abstraction study was conducted as part of the commitment of Alberta Health Wellness to continued data quality improvement. The purpose of the study was to: gain a better understanding of current data quality; enhance consistency in data collection; determine opportunities for improving data quality; and establish a baseline for future re-abstraction studies. Description

The Ambulatory Care Classification System, or ACCS, was developed by Alberta Health and WEllness in 1997. Since its implementation, the volume of data submitted to Alberta Health and Wellness has grown each year. This document reports on the results of a project which was initiated to demonstrate how data from ACCS could be used to describe and assess ambulatory services provided in Alberta. It summarizes the current use and users of ACCS data, and reviews major opportunities and challenges in using ACCS data and hilghlights issues that could enhance the utility of ACCS.
