Description

Crown forest management plans (FMPs) detail when, where and how timber on Alberta Crown land will be managed in order to balance social, economic and environmental needs based on input from the public, Indigenous peoples and interest groups. A component of a FMP called a timber supply analysis (TSA) was prepared by Mercer Peace River Pulp Ltd. (Formerly known as Daishowa-Marubeni International Ltd.). The TSA covers PO5, P22 and S26 (Formerly PO1 and PO3) located in northern Alberta within the Upper and Lower Peace Land-use Framework planning regions; they fall within the Dry Mixedwood, Peace River Parkland, Lower Boreal Highlands and Central Mixedwood Natural Subregions.

AVIE and a lidar-derived slope position were created by Agriculture and Forestry. Rules used to classify the data were developed by Environment and Parks. DEP v2.0 includes updated AVI, new lidar and an Alberta Wetlands Classification System field.

Description

The Aquifer Vulnerability Index (AVI) is a method of assessing the vulnerability of aquifers to surface contaminants in Alberta. An aquifer is a geological formation that is permeable enough to transmit sufficient quantities of water to possible to support the development of water wells. In the assessment of aquifer vulnerability to potential contamination, the depth to the aquifer and the types of geological materials above them are considered. For example, aquifers closer to the surface overlain with pervious surface materials are more vulnerable to contaminants, as compared to aquifers found deeper and covered with a thick layer of impervious material. The AVI ratings indicate the potential of surficial materials to transmit water withy contaminants to the aquifer over a period of time. This data was created in 2002 using ArcGIS.

Forest company forest management plans (FMPs) detail when, where and how timber on Alberta Crown land will be managed in order to balance social, economic and environmental needs based on input from the public, Indigenous peoples and interest groups. The forest management planning area under consideration is FMA 7500020. The FMP includes the FMA and non-FMA portions of Forest Management Unit (FMU) W14, collectively known as the Defined Forest Area (DFA). The DFA is located within the Upper Athabasca, and Upper Peace Land-Use Framework planning regions in west central Alberta; it falls within the Upper Foothills, Lower Foothills, and Central Mixedwood Natural Subregions.
