This guide introduces Alberta's occupational health and safety laws and the role of the worker in ensuring health and safety at the work site. It discusses provincial legislation related to occupational health and safety and describes the responsibilities of the workplace supervisor, employer and the provincial government, as well as those of the worker, in ensuring a healthy and safe workplace. It also looks at non-compliance and explains what steps can be taken if supervisors or other work site parties don't comply with the law.

An occupational health and safety (OHS) allowance allows a work site party to vary from specific provisions of the OHS Code. A work site will have the flexibility to either follow the original rule in the OHS Code or follow the allowance. An allowance has been issued to allow demolition of a building without first removing materials with the potential to release asbestos fibres so long as the set of terms and conditions in the allowance is followed. The allowance applies in situations where a professional engineer has certified that the structural integrity of a building is or may become compromised due to abatement activities such that it would create a hazard to workers.
