This report outlines the sub-models developed to estimate merchantable density for the four species groups modeled by the Growth and Yield Projection System (GYPSY). These sub-models were designed to work in concert with the GYPSY sub-models published in May 2009 (see Related).

Description

Growth and Yield Projection System (GYPSY) is a forest growth model composed of a number of sub-models or functions. GYPSY is used to forecast the growth and yield of stands of trees on a per hectare basis. The 2009 version has been updated to include modelling capability for multiple species in pure and mixed species stands. It also enables forest managers to predict future growth based on reforestation survey results.

The Forest Industry Sustainability Committee was formed by the Government of Alberta to investigate options for strengthening the global competitiveness of the province's forest sector. Comprised of three MLAs and three senior forest industry executives, the Forest Industry Sustainability Committee engaged in extensive stakeholder dialogue before presenting its final report to the Minister of Alberta Sustainable Resource Development in August 2008.

With the rapid pace of change in the local, national and global business environment, improvements to the business model are required. Maintaining the status quo is not an option. Improvements to the business model need to reflect the challenges facing the industry, and a clear vision for forestry in Alberta's future. The vision, drivers, shifts and outcomes identified in the original report entitled "recommendations for enhancing Alberta's business model" were discussed and modified, and provide important policy direction for the recommendations contained in this report.
