Description

Pursuant to the Continuing Care Act, Continuing Care Regulation, and the accommodation standards, every person living in a licensed supportive living accommodation, type A continuing care home, or type B continuing care home and their families have the opportunity to set up a resident and family council. The Resident and Family Councils Toolkit is intended to help residents and families of licensed supportive living accommodations and continuing care homes set up and maintain councils. It contains tools and ideas that may also be useful for facilities with existing councils.

This guide is to assist operators of continuing care homes and supportive living accommodations to meet the licensing requirements of Alberta’s Continuing Care Act. Getting Started answers the questions prospective operators may have when applying for a licence to provide continuing care services. It describes how to apply for a licence and what is expected of licensed operators. It also describes what is involved in the inspection and monitoring of accommodations and what to expect when a provider is in contravention with Alberta Health and enforcement is required. We encourage prospective operators to schedule a pre-consultation meeting with the Continuing Care Licensing Office to discuss their plans before starting this application process

Description

According to the Continuing Care Regulation under the Continuing Care Act, all licensed supportive living operators are legally required to follow the provincial standards. The accommodation standards provide the standards for voluntary, public, and private organizations operating supportive living accommodations in Alberta. The standards direct operators of supportive living accommodations in the delivery of quality accommodation services to residents.  The purpose of the accommodation standards is to ensure that all supportive living accommodations maintain a high quality of accommodation services that promote the safety, security, and quality of life for Albertans living in those accommodations. Operators of supportive living accommodations will also be able to provide assurances to residents, employees, the public and municipalities that their accommodations are operating in accordance with established accommodation standards.

Continuing care health service standards (CCHSS) are a legislated requirement of operators pursuant to the Continuing Care Regulation under the Continuing Care Act. The standards set the minimum requirement that operators in the continuing care system must comply with in the provision of publicly funded health care. The CCHSS direct requirements related to the provision of publicly funded health care in the continuing care system, applying to operators providing facility-based care in continuing care homes as well as those providing home and community care.
