Description

The Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) is a publicly-funded health care plan. It is established in accordance with the Canada Health Act principles of public administration, comprehensiveness, universality, portability and accessibility. The Statistical Supplement is an accompaniment to the Alberta Ministry of Health annual report and includes data on the number of people registered with the AHCIP, payments made by the AHCIP to Alberta physicians and allied practitioners (dental specialists/oral surgeons, optometrists and podiatrists) for services provided to Albertans, and payments for services provided to Albertans while they are out of the country. The Statistical Supplement also reports data on the non-group supplementary health insurance plans.

In 2003, the Provincial Comprehensive Health Workforce Plan (CHWP) established a framework for workforce planning for health care in Alberta. A recommendation for moving forward was that all health authorities commit to ensuring workforce planners communicate best workforce planning practices with each other, and wherever possible, collaborate on planning practices and joint workforce strategies. The purpose of this Guide is to provide information for partners that will facilitate the overall understanding of health human resources planning at the provincial level; and highlight the importance of integrating the work between provincial and health authority business planners, provincial and health authority workforce planners, and clinical leaders.

This report presents findings from a Service Optimization Review undertaken as part of the ongoing mission of Alberta Health and Wellness to provide a patient-focused health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans. The project identified opportunities to increase the quality and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of health care service delivery in Alberta. Offers 14 recommendations across four themes: matching intensity of services to patient need; enhancing access to high-quality services in rural areas; enhancing the capacity and effectiveness of Alberta's health industry workforce; and improving the coordination of care.
