This report was compiled to describe the overall sectoral characteristics and trends in economic activity in southern Alberta, to identify key drivers that may determine the future direction of the economy, and to give a general description of the types of environmental impacts that might be expected as a result of economic development in key sectors. Data included in this report were collected through a document and literature review and through interviews with social and environmental scientists, economists, industry representatives, and government officials.

Presents results of a research project to create a cost-effective computing method to enable Time-Cost Trade-off (TCT) optimization analysis on construction projects of practical size and complexity reflecting those in the real world. The researchers aim was to work toward formalizing guidelines for TCT optimization that would consider safety and time and cost constraints related to the expedition of construction projects. It is postulated that having guidelines and analysis tools such as these may decrease hazardous situations and safety risks that have been associated with expedition of construction project schedules.

As part of the the development of a strategy to enhance the province's air emissions management framework, the Government of Alberta explored the potential for implementing an Alberta-based air pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions trading system and other alternative approaches to setting air emissions limits for the Province as a whole as well as for potential participants in the trading regime. This study was commissioned to inform Alberta's decision-making process by evaluating relevant multipollutant trading regimes operating in other jurisdictions and developing a set of lessons learned that could be applicable to the Alberta setting.

This report is an economic assessment of the potential impact to Alberta farmers if Clubroot continues to spread. Three scenarios are developed: a baseline scenario that assumes Clubroot does not become an issue, and two scenarios that model potential Clubroot outbreaks due to shorter rotations. These two scenarios assume that over a 12 year crop rotation, the disease gradually develops until it reaches levels that reduce canola yields by 35% and 75%, respectively. The net economic impact could vary from $16 to $76 per acre during the mid and late stages of the 12 year rotation. The one-in-two year rotation has a significantly higher economic loss, assuming the disease prevalence assumption is realized.
