Description

Every two years, Advanced Education commissions a survey of post-secondary graduates in order to collect information that will inform strategic planning and results reporting regarding graduate demographics, satisfaction, financing of education, outcomes, and changes over time. This report presents the findings of the survey of 2018-2019 academic year graduates from private vocational training institutions.

Every two years, Advanced Education commissions a survey of post-secondary graduates called the Graduate Outcomes Survey, to collect information that is used to inform strategic planning and results reporting, both for the Province and for post-secondary institutions. The project also included the Employment Success Survey, which is fielded to supervisors of employed graduates, to acquire information about the skills and knowledge of recent graduates and to what extent they match the types of skills and knowledge that employers require in employees.

Alberta’s future prosperity and growth depends on the mobility of talent, skills, ideas, and innovations across international borders. Alberta’s post-secondary institutions play a key role in attracting and developing the talent and skills Alberta needs now and in the future. Alberta’s International Education Strategy: A Post-Secondary Approach to Attracting and Developing Global Talent was developed in collaboration with stakeholders to ensure the province has a pipeline of global talent to support the provincial economy for decades to come. The strategy includes key actions government will undertake to support Alberta’s international education sector.

This includes policy direction on institutional roles, mandates, relationships with each other, with government, and to some extent with their communities. The framework differentiates the publicly-funded post-secondary system in Alberta into six sectors and assigns each of the 26 publicly-funded institutions to one of the sectors, providing descriptions of the programming, research and collaboration mandates of each sector.

Every two years, Advanced Education commissions a survey of post-secondary graduates called the Graduate Outcomes Survey, to collect information that is used to inform strategic planning and results reporting by the Province and by post-secondary institutions. This report presents the findings of the survey of 2015-2016 academic year graduates from publicly funded post-secondary institutions, and 2016-2017 academic year graduates from private vocational training institutions. The report also includes findings of the second Employment Success Survey, which surveys supervisors of employed graduates of publicly funded post-secondary institutions, to acquire information about the skills and knowledge of recent publicly funded post-secondary institution graduates and to what extent they match the types of skills and knowledge that employers require in employees.

Between 2015 and 2020, Alberta’s economy is expected to add approximately 197,000 new jobs. In addition, over 50.0% of all new jobs are expected to require some form of learning beyond a high school education. Post-secondary education is a degree, certificate (including a trade certificate), or diploma from an educational institution beyond the secondary (high school) level. More education and training is expected to be a key to success in the new economy. Over the next five years, there will be a strong demand for occupations that need university degrees.
