Description

The misuse and abuse of prescription drugs is harming too many Albertans. Ease of access and affordability of medications such as opioid pain relievers, stimulants, tranquillizers and sedatives, can quickly and easily lead to addiction. Compounding this ease of accessibility and affordability is the false perception that if a health care practitioner prescribes these medications, they are safe. This report from the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health provides statistics on the prevalence of prescription drug use and misuse, outlines the main issues that need to be addressed, and provides four recommended actions to address the problem.

The report is organized around five themes: educating Albertans about stroke; reducing stroke occurrence and mortality; improving access to best care; improving health care system efficiency; and improving satisfaction with care.

Following the declaration by the World Health Organization of the spread of the H1N1 virus as a global pandemic in the first half of 2009, Alberta Health and Wellness contracted a consulting firm to assist in the development of a governance model to enable timely cross-ministry decision-making during a pandemic response. A number of stakeholders were interviewed and two governance models were reviewed. This report presents a recommended pandemic response governance model which is adapted from the strengths of the two models under review.

A Health Action Plan for Alberta was announced by the Minister of Health and Wellness in April 2008. A key component of this plan is the development of a pharmaceutical strategy. A consultation process was implemented to meet key stakeholders, summarize their comments, and make key recommendations. Meetings were held with 16 stakeholder groups representing patients, physicians, pharmacists, employers, benefit providers, and the pharmaceutical industry. Written submissions were also welcomed. This document summarizes the stakeholders input and presents 10 recommendations for the government to implement.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is the leading cause of preventable birth defects and one of the leading causes of developmental delay in children in Canada. The Physicians for FASD Prevention project, whose findings are presented in this report, provided valuable insight into the disparities between research findings and recommendations for FASD screening and prevention, and the realities of primary care physicians providing those services in every day clinical practice. This project attempted to develop and implement supports for physicians to improve FASD screening and prevention services they deliver to all women of childbearing age.

Alberta Blue Cross (ABC) has been providing supplementary health care plan services since 1996. Since this time, concern has been expressed regarding ABC competing directly in the supplementary health care insurance industry and unfairly enjoying competitive advantages. In August 2002, The Minister of Health and Wellness established The Alberta Blue Cross Review Committee (Committee) to review the competitive advantages enjoyed by ABC. The Committee was also asked to review ABC's business activities within the context of its legislative framework, ABC's legal status, its status as a not-for-profit organization, its governance and accountability structures, and any other relevant issues. This report provides an overview of the Committee's findings and recommendations. It also provides the Committee's assessment and specific recommendations on key issues that have been identified.

The Alberta-Wide Diabetes Forum, held November 4 to 6, 1999, offered stakeholders the opportunity to discuss the issues, challenges and barriers they face concerning diabetes management and care. The Forum also provided the participants with the opportunity to make some recommendations for changes needed in Alberta to address diabetes as a major public health concern. This report presents a summary of the forum proceedings and lists the six recommendations that were put forward to government as a result of the forum’s discussions.

Description

Primarily in response to financial difficulties encountered by some Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) community boards in June 1999, a review was requested to look into why and how these financial difficulties had arisen. The review also looked at other issues impacting PDD beyond the financial aspect. The review included confidential interviews with various stakeholders, a review of financial-related materials by an independent and private accountant, and a series of public meetings. As a result, the observations and recommendations in this report reflect the advice and suggestions of hundreds of Albertans. These recommendations are intended to serve as a starting point to address key issues and provide a stable, predictable and accountable PDD system that values, protects, supports and enhances the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities.
