Description

Annual reports of the Family Support for Children with Disabilities Provincial Parent Advisory Committee.The committee provides input and feedback on policies, procedures and services as they affect families of children with disabilities to ensure legislation continues to have a positive impact on families and their children. The Advisory Committee also provides systemic advocacy for families of children with disabilities and assists in the development of strategies to increase public awareness on the challenges and opportunities faced by families of children with disabilities.

Description

Contains the responses of the Ministry of Community and Social Services to recommendations from the Office of the Child and Youth Advocate for mandatory reviews into child deaths. The Child and Youth Advocate Act provides the Advocate with the authority to conduct investigative reviews. The Advocate may investigate systemic issues arising from the death of a child who was receiving child intervention services within two years of their death. The Act requires each ministry to respond publicly within 75 days of the release of a report.

In September 2021, the Office of the Child and Youth Advocate (OCYA) released the Strengthening Foundations report, which reviewed the circumstances of nine young people who died over a fourteen-month period in 2018 and 2019 and who had experienced similar challenges in service provision. The report provides two recommendations to address the limitations in assessments, information sharing and collaboration among service providers. This document contains the response of the Ministry of Community and Social Services to these recommendations.

The protocol supports the shared commitment to build and sustain effective, collaborative relationships across the two ministries, as well as with other relevant Government of Alberta programs, such as the Office of the Public Guardian/Trustee, Health/Alberta Health Services and Education/schools.
