Water supply in the South Saskatchewan River Basin in Alberta is naturally subject to highly variable flows. Capture and controlled release of these flows is critical in the management of the available water supply. Expanding population, economic growth and climate variability add additional challenges to managing our limited water supply. This study identifies management of existing reservoirs and the development of additional water storage sites as potential solutions to SSRB water management challenges.

Water supply in the South Saskatchewan River Basin in Alberta is naturally subject to highly variable flows. Capture and controlled release of these flows is critical in the management of the available water supply. This report was submitted as advice to guide development of Phase 2 of the water management plan for the South Saskatchewan River Basin. It presents the work of four basin advisory committees which were formed for the primary purpose of recommending water conservation objectives for each major river downstream of the major dams that would provide a reference point for the future and would describe the best balance between protection of the aquatic environment and consumption of water for economic growth.
