After leading all provinces in economic growth in 2011, Alberta again led in 2012 as Alberta’s real gross domestic product rose an estimated 3.9%. In 2012, much of Alberta’s strong economic performance was either directly or indirectly tied to its large and expanding oil and gas sector.

International merchandise exports are a major driver of Alberta’s economy, accounting for more than 30% of Alberta’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In 2012, the value of Alberta’s merchandise exports rose a meager 1.7% to $94.8 billion. However, this weak growth was the result of lower commodity prices as export volumes increased by an estimated 5½% in 2012. Such a high growth rate for export volumes provided a boost to Alberta’s economic growth in 2012.

Alberta has the highest number of businesses per capita in Canada, with 39.4 businesses per 1000 people.

The rapid growth in investment since 1996 as well as the large decline during the recession and subsequent resurgence can be largely attributed to strong energy prices and technological breakthroughs. For 2013, investment is not expected to be a major driver of economic growth as energy investment weakens.

According to Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey, employment rose 55,500 in Alberta in 2012 or by 2.7% from 2011, the highest provincial growth rate. Most of the employment gains were recorded in the Edmonton and Calgary regions. Alberta’s unemployment rate fell to a four-year low of 4.6%.

Using the three commonly accepted yardsticks for ranking an economy’s sectors we will examine which is Alberta’s largest manufacturing sector. There is no easy answer to the above question as all three yardsticks rank different sectors on top. Using revenues Alberta’s refineries sector ranks well ahead of the other sectors. If the sectors are ranked using employment as the yardstick, fabricated metals ranks first. Finally, on a GDP basis machinery is the top ranked manufacturing sector in Alberta.

Although Alberta’s economy was harder hit during the “great recession” than most other provincial economies, by 2011 Alberta’s GDP had fully recovered from the downturn. In this commentary we will show that most of Alberta’s major sectors have indeed managed to recover quite well from this downturn, by examining real GDP growth between 2008 and 2011.
