Following an Alberta-British Columbia joint premiers and ministers meeting in 2004, the ministers of transportation were asked to review their airport strategies in relation to the airport strategy of the federal government. The ministers worked with stakeholders to facilitate the development of a northern airports strategy that recognized the role of airports as economic enablers for business, freight and tourism.
