Description

The implementation of the Emissions Trading Code in Ontario in 2001 introduced the use of market-based instruments for reducing emissions of nitric oxide and sulphur dioxide in that province. The intent of the Code was to help Ontario move ahead on economic and environmental objectives, including: reducing the deficit, ensuring a sound financial footing for environmental infrastructure and services, encouraging innovation, and enhancing competitiveness. This report reviews and assesses the impact of the Code, and presents some learnings for Alberta.

This quantification protocol is written for the acid gas processing system operator or an acid gas project developer. Some familiarity with, or general understanding of, the operation of an acid gas processing facility is assumed. The opportunity for generating carbon offsets with this protocol arises from the direct and indirect reductions of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting from the geological sequestration of acid gas streams containing greenhouse gases as part of raw natural gas processing.
