Description

In June 2011, the updated 2010 Reclamation Criteria for Wellsites and Associated Facilities for Cultivated Lands, Forested Lands, and Native Grasslands were released. The Reclamation Criteria Advisory Group recommended that the 2010 criteria be reviewed periodically and updated as necessary as knowledge of ecosystem processes improves. Throughout the 2011 field season, questions relating to the three 2010 Criteria along with their assessment tools were tracked and these questions and answers have been compiled into this document. Other frequently asked questions on the application form and peatlands have also been included.

The aim of reclamation under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act is to obtain "equivalent land capacity," which is defined as the ability of the land to support various land uses after conservation and reclamation similar to the ability that existed prior to activity being conducted on the land. The criteria presented in this document are to be used to evaluate whether a site has met equivalent land capability. The criteria are based on land function and operability that will support the production of goods and services consistent in quality and quantity with the surrounding landscape.

Description

Drilling waste disposal has been regulated in Alberta since 1975. Oil and gas operators are required to show compliance with government standards by submitting disposal information for drilling waste that was disposed of on a wellsite or at a remote sump or land treatment site. This document was developed by representatives from the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, drilling waste disposal consultants, the Energy Resources Conservation Board, and Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development to provide guidance for assessing drilling waste disposal areas for reclamation.
