Description

Environmental Impact Assessment registry documents pertaining to the proposed Suncor Energy Inc. Lewis project. The proposal is for in situ extraction with an estimated total bitumen production of 160,000 bpd and an operational life of up to 40 years. The project would be developed in four phases, supported by cogeneration of electricity to be constructed within the first two phases. Project components include gas fired steam generation including some cogeneration, water treatment and recycling, bitumen treatment, multi-well production pads, steam delivery pipelines, product recovery pipelines, local access roads, and borrow pits. The proposal is to develop additional coal reserves adjacent to existing mining operations in Coal Valley in Yellowhead County. The proposed Mercoal West Mine Project would produce 7.2 million tonnes of processed coal and be located northwest of the community of Mercoal. The Yellowhead Tower Mine Project would produce 6.0 million tonnes of processed coal and be located northwest of the community of Coalspur. The EIA was deemed complete in 2009. Description

The Ecosystem Services approach pilot on wetlands is part of the Alberta Environment and Water’s 10-year ecosystem services road map. Its completion and results are considered a progression in understanding and applying an ecosystem services approach to support decision making. Ecosystems provide innumerable services that are underrepresented or absent in most economic development decisions; however, these services contribute to development objectives (e.g., scenic quality of the land) and to realizing quality of life goals. Identifying and understanding many of the services from wetlands can provide more information to decision makers, which may help to prevent unintended consequences from development decisions.
