Description

Subdivision and Development Appeal Boards (SDAB) hear appeals from municipal subdivision and development authorities. By hearing appeals and making decisions on land use in Alberta, an SDAB fulfills a vital function in achieving the goals of orderly, beneficial and economic development. Appeal board decisions shape the community and affect the lives of developers, neighbours, citizens, and businesses. The goal of this training manual is to provide individuals with enough information to be able to identify potential issues that may arise during an appeal hearing. The manual will support an appeal board in conducting effective hearings, making and writing legally binding decisions, and acting within the scope of its authority.

Description

The Alberta Grade 6 Social Studies program of studies focuses on citizenship, identity and democratic processes of decision-making within our society. Students explore ways to participate in democratic processes, be involved in their communities and develop beliefs, values and attitudes that empower them to effect change. The topic of local government is a natural place for students to investigate how issues, challenges and decisions are dealt with in communities. The Building Communities Through Local Government resources provide opportunities for students to explore local government in the context of their own and other communities. The resources support General Outcome 6.1 of the Alberta Social Studies program of studies. They are based on a fundamental assumption that students should be involved in decision-making and encouraged to consider ways that they can be active, participatory and engaged citizens.

This document is aimed at a wide audience, including homeowners, engineers, architects, contractors, developers, regulators, as well as members from municipal, provincial and federal levels of government. Background information on each aspect of a RWH system is discussed and relevant clauses from existing codes and regulations, standards, and guidelines are presented, as well as additional design criteria derived from recent field experience and international best practices for rainwater harvesting. An accompanying document, Alberta Guidelines for Residential Rainwater Harvesting Systems – 2010 is a more concise version of this document, and is recommended for individuals with knowledge of the building sector and the basic trades involved in rainwater harvesting (i.e., plumbing, electrical, and site service work).
