This report was prepared in light of the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) incident in Alberta and the closure of international borders to Canadian beef and live cattle on May 20, 2003. The purpose of this report is to provide detailed information on Alberta and Canada exports and imports of beef and live cattle on a monthly basis from January to June 2003. Comparable data for the same period of 2002 are also provided. The information is presented in the form of statistical tables, charts and highlights reviewing Alberta trade in beef and live cattle in the first half of 2003.

Reports on research conducted to determine if using grain precleaners makes economic sense. Results show that using grain precleaners to improve the grade of grain they are shipping does provide a positive economic benefit. However, there is a net economic disadvantage to using the precleaner to remove dockage in an attempt to reduce freight costs on grain with average dockage levels.

Grain companies and seed cleaning plants are making grain screenings available to livestock producers as feed. But to optimize the nutrient value to animals, processing by grinding or rolling is required. In addition, grain and weed seeds must be rendered nonviable. This research update looks at the viability of using grain screenings from seed cleaning operations and grain elevators as an economical livestock feed.

Presents the results of a 1997 examination of harvest methods to assess their suitability for whole-crop harvesting. The project examined the performance of a relatively new harvest technique known as the stripper header. Five methods of harvesting, including the stripper header, were then examined for their ability to efficiently collect and process grain, chaff and straw. Costs and revenues for each method were determined, and a net harvest product value was determined for each system by subtracting the total operating costs from the value of the commodities produced. In general, it appears that the economics of the system improves as the amount of processing in the field is reduced.

Alberta landholders in the natural range of elk have occasionally suffered substantial losses of stored hay during winter. Depredation of hay and greenfeed bales by elk is worst when snowfall occurs early and the snow is deep. Fencing hay yards with 2.1 m high mesh wire has been an effective, but expensive, way to keep elk away from stored hay. A more economical way to prevent elk and deer damage employing electrified fencing is being used by farmers in British Columbia. To test the effectiveness of this kind of fencing in Alberta, an electric fence was built around a one acre hay yard near Niton Junction. Elk had been responsible for serious hay depredation at the farm in the previous winter. Elk were unable to penetrate the electric fence. Not only was the fence effective, but the electric fence cost much less to build than a comparable fence using barrier mesh. The material cost for building an electric fence is about half the cost of a mesh fence.
