The Provincial Bison Protection Areas dataset is comprised of all the polygons that represent Bison Protection Areas in Alberta. In order to support the conservation, management and recovery of disease-free bison in northern Alberta, wood bison located within specified Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) are listed as Threatened under the Wildlife Act and Regulation. All hunting of wood bison within Northwest Bison Protection Area is regulated and based on issuance of a bison special licence and allocation processes for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous persons. All hunting (Indigenous and non-Indigenous) of wood bison within the Wabasca Bison Protection Area is prohibited. Legal descriptions of the boundaries of Provincial Bison Protection Areas can be found within Schedule 11 of the Wildlife Regulation. The actual boundary used by individual WPACs may differ from what is contained in this data.These boundaries were derived from the Drainage Basins of Alberta and contain all currently designated WPACs and one yet to be established for the combined Peace and Slave River basins. This data is available to Government of Alberta staff via Layer Manager. For other access to the data, please contact the distributor.

The task force included representatives from First Nations, Métis groups, municipalities, environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGOs), the forest industry, the energy industry, trappers, motorized recreation groups, and other land-users. This reports presents the recommendations made by the task force to inform the development of a sub-regional plan for the Bistcho Lake sub-regional area, which includes the Bistcho woodland caribou range.

Special licences are used in situations where a species (e.g, Elk) could not withstand the hunting pressure of a general season, or where they are need to meet a specific management goal (e.g., the goal in the antlered mule deer draw areas is to develop and maintain a more balanced age structure in the herd). A special licence allows a hunter to hunt the type of big game animal (e.g., antlerless elk) in the area (a WMU, a group of WMUs, or a portion of one or more WMUs) specified on the licence. This dataset displays the special licence boundaries for both residents and/or non-residents for the following species type: Antlered and Antlerless Elk, Antlered and Antlerless White-tailed Deer, Antlered and Antlerless Mule Deer, Antlered and Antlerless Moose, Calf Moose, Mountain Goat, Non-trophy and Trophy Sheep, Non-Trophy and Trophy Antelope, and Merriam's Turkey.
