Environmental assessment registry documents pertaining to the proposed Montem Resources Alberta Operations Ltd. Tent Mountain Project. The Project would involve the resumption of mining at a surface coal mine, a coal preparation plant and associated infrastructure including a coal conveyor system and a rail load-out facility. The total project area would be confined to the existing Mine Permit area of 750 hectares and the mine production would average 1.2 million tonnes of metallurgical coal per year. Description

The McLeod River headwaters originate in the Rocky Mountains in west-central Alberta and join the Athabasca River near Whitecourt. Coal mining has occurred in the McLeod watershed since the 1970s and more recently, there has been both reclamation and expansion of mine sites in the upper basin. In this study, trends in surface water quality parameters in the McLeod River watershed were assessed over time to understand changes in water quality and associations with active mining and reclamation activity.

Description

Environmental assessment registry documents pertaining to the proposed Coalspur Mines (Operations) Ltd. Vista Coal Mine Project Phase II. Coalspur is proposing an expansion of their approved Vista Coal Mine. The expansion would be a westward continuation of the existing mine and be an open pit surface coal mine to recover the same seams and using the same methods as the existing mine. The expansion would use existing infrastructure such as: coal processing facilities (including refuse production facilities), primary access roads and a coal loadout facility. The coal mined from the combined operation would be transported by rail to west coast ports, then shipped via ocean vessels to foreign markets. Coalspur would operate the mine as one complex with potential to increase annual production from 10 to 15Mt (million clean tons) on average. Coalbed gas (CBG) effectively consists of methane with minor amounts of ethane and propane, but no hydrogen sulphide (H2S). Recognition of CBG as an increasingly important energy resource has led to rapid expansion of exploration activity. Rapid development started in the 1980s in the western United States of America (USA), and has spread over the last six years to the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin (WCSB). Increased production activities have brought increased awareness of environmental issues surrounding CBG development. In particular, reports of negative experiences associated with early CBG development in the USA have raised stakeholder concerns in Canada. Alberta CBG development has largely avoided the water resources issues experienced in the USA from CBG exploitation for two reasons.
