Description

The North Saskatchewan Regional Advisory Council was appointed by Cabinet to provide strategic advice in the development of the North Saskatchewan Regional Plan. In its advice submitted to the government in December 2014, the council provided 69 recommendations in six topic areas: managing wetlands and lakes as part of watershed management; supporting biodiversity in the region; inclusion of Indigenous Peoples in land-use planning; community growth and community land-use planning; management of outdoor recreation; and economic development.

This infographic explains the process followed for becoming a community timber program member and for applying for a community timber permit. Like commercial timber permits, the community timber permit sets terms and conditions that must be met before harvest operations can begin. Community timber permit programs allow the timber volume sold to remain focused on generating economic benefits among the local members of the Coniferous Community Timber Permit Program. For an individual to become a Community Timber Permit Program Member there must be an available vacancy that the Forestry department has justification to fill. The program vacancy will only be filled if there is available timber volume within the permit program. While this membership provides access to potential community timber permits, there are no tenure rights associated with community timber permit program membership. Alberta’s Land-use Framework (LUF), released in December 2008, sets out a new approach to managing the province’s land and natural resources to achieve Alberta’s long-term economic, environmental and social goals. The LUF establishes seven new land-use regions and calls for the development of a regional plan for each. The South Saskatchewan Regional Plan sets the stage for robust growth, vibrant communities and a healthy environment within the region over the next 50 years. This resource presents an amendment of the original plan published in 2014.
