Description

In December 2023, the Government of Canada announced plans to implement a national cap-and-trade system to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the oil and gas sector to achieve the goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. This report, prepared by the Conference Board of Canada and presented to Alberta Treasury Board and Finance, estimates the potential economic impact of a greenhouse gas emissions cap on the oil and gas sector.

A conservation offset is a tool that enables industry to offset adverse effects of their activities and development by supporting conservation efforts on other lands. In 2009 the Government of Alberta commissioned a study to conduct an analysis of conservation offset options for Alberta. The objective of the study was to evaluate a suite of design options in terms of their ecological and economic impacts and their institutional feasibility. The purpose of the analysis is to provide a deeper understanding of the impact of different offset design options on policy goals, and demonstrate through a proof of concept how different policy options could work in a scaled-up regulated offset market.

This research was initiated by the Department of Energy, Government of Alberta and Alberta Innovates – Energy and Environment Solutions in order to understand the energy, emissions and water flow patterns in the Province of Alberta through the development of Sankey diagrams. Sankey diagrams are a specific type of diagram in which the width of the arrows is proportional to the quantity of flow. A key objective of this research is developing an Alberta-specific energy forecasting and planning model for studying different greenhouse gas mitigation scenarios for the energy demand and supply sectors of the Province of Alberta.

A conservation offset is a tool that enables industry to offset adverse effects of their activities and development by supporting conservation efforts on other lands. In 2009 the Government of Alberta commissioned a study to conduct an analysis of conservation offset options for Alberta. The objective of the study was to evaluate a suite of design options in terms of their ecological and economic impacts and their institutional feasibility. This report summarizes research on offset policy options carried out under the project.

This addendum outlines Forest Management Plan-specific ground rules which apply to area outlined in Forest Management Agreement 0900044 and 0900045. These rules are in addition to the Alberta Timber Harvest Planning and Operating Ground Rules 2022. Where a rule in the Addendum and a rule in the Provincial OGR relate to the same subject matter or objective, the rule in the Addendum governs. FMP-specific addendums are supplemental to the OGRs and will be negotiated with the applicable FMA holder where additional ground rules are needed to address specific strategies in an FMP or unique physical or non-physical landscape attributes. These are meant to be a small list related to specific FMP requirements and not a preferred deviation or exceptions from the provincial OGRs.

Monthly notice of the general rate of timber dues for timber that is used to make lumber, pulp or roundwood products, including the portion of dues collected by the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta ("FRIAA"). Timber dues and other fees associated with timber dispositions are collected by the province to ensure that Albertans receive fair compensation for the use of publicly-owned forest resources. The timber dues rates applied are based on current market and financial conditions are can be found in Table 1 of the Timber Dues Ministerial Order. NOTE: previously issued under the title General Rates of Timber.
