Description

Alberta's framework for the management of contaminated sites is designed to achieve three policy outcomes: pollution prevention, health protection, and productive use. Under this framework, three management options are provided: Tier 1, Tier 2, and Exposure Control. Under Tier 2 it may be possible to screen out certain exposure pathways and/or modify the Tier 1 guidelines on the basis of site conditions. This companion document describes how the Tier 2 approach might be used to develop remediation objectives for a site.

Description

The application of a dynamic water quality model representing the North Saskatchewan River (NSR) reaches, being potentially impacted by activities in the Capital Region and Industrial Heartland (IH), was identified by the IH Steering Committee as a key component in providing support for implementation of the Water Management Framework. As such, Alberta Environment and Parks (formerly Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development) has developed a hydrodynamic and water quality model, based on the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code (EFDC) platform for the North Saskatchewan River system. The use of this model application evaluates contaminant loadings, and their effect on river water quality, under various management and engineering options in the IH area. Additionally, the dynamic water quality model is the basis for a larger integrated model of the NSR Basin to support broader-scale watershed and regional planning.

Description

Pigeon and Wabamun Lakes are among the most heavily used recreational lakes in Alberta. Recently, apparent increases in algal blooms and fish kills have threatened the ecological integrity of these systems and may negatively affect their value to users. Limnological studies for the lakes are limited to the past 35 years, leading to uncertainty about the degree to which water quality has changed due to human activities. This study was initiated to fill this information gap from historical limnological data preserved in lake sediments. To better understand how to effectively manage cumulative impacts on the lakes, it is necessary to understand conditions in the lakes prior to development. Knowing these pre-development conditions will assist in setting reasonable and achievable goals for lake management.

Description

The purpose of this report was to provide a synoptic evaluation of the North Saskatchewan River and anthropogenic impacts on that system. The report summarizes data collected from 2007-2012 and builds on findings from technical study reports produced during this time period, including information on water quality, sediment quality and biota. This document provides a summary of the studies conducted, their purpose, methods, information gained and relevance to local and basin-wide water management. The report also evaluates the present state of the aquatic environment in the NSR and assesses effects on the in-stream water quality and aquatic ecosystem health resulting from current human activities in the watershed.
