Language is the fourth release from the Census of Canada taken on May 11, 2021. This release explores language characteristics of the Canadian population: mother tongue, knowledge of official languages, languages most often spoken at home, and other home languages. In Alberta, most people speak English but immigrant languages, especially those from Asian countries, are becoming increasingly common. In addition, Indigenous languages are increasingly being used in households.

In Canada, English and French are the two official languages. The latest release from the 2021 Census of Canada shows that Alberta is home to 64,440 people with French as their first official language. As part of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom, French-speaking minorities have the right to receive schooling in French for their primary and secondary education. Seven per cent of school-aged children in Alberta are eligible for instruction in the minority official language.

A population projection is a forecast of future population growth. Future population growth for Alberta is projected under three different growth scenarios: the medium, or reference, scenario and high- and low-growth scenarios. Projections of each component of population growth (fertility, mortality and migration) are developed based on past trends, modified to account for possible future patterns of change.
