Mortality assessments of mountain pine beetles are conducted annually between mid-May and mid-June to predict how successfully beetle populations may spread the upcoming year. The results of these surveys, combined with aerial surveys and ground assessments conducted in August/September, help the province prioritize areas for single tree treatment and timber harvest control tactics implemented in the fall and winter.

These models predict individual tree diameters at breast height from tree heights (varies by report). They can be used at both the population and plot-specific levels with varying degrees of accuracy. Different procedures for making the predictions under different circumstances are presented. Examples of model application are demonstrated based on real data.
