They constitute the methods used to implement decisions made in forest management plans and other higher-level plans such as integrated resource plans. Ground rules establish practices that minimize the chance of negative effects from timber harvesting and forest management operations and activities.

The Scaling Standards of Alberta provides the standards of measurement used to determine the quantity and quality of timber harvested in Alberta. In addition, the standards provide information about compiling and reporting harvest data and describes non-standard scale methods used to estimate volumes of decked and stacked timber. These standards are authorized and posted under sections 2(1) and 2(2) of the Forests (Ministerial) Regulation, pursuant to Section 5(e) of the Forests Act.

The Government of Alberta, through the Department of Agriculture and Forestry (AF), regulates forest management on the Crown Land of Alberta. Reforestation in Alberta is the responsibility, by law, of those who harvest trees on Crown Land. Companies that harvest trees are required to report the result of their reforestation activities to the government annually (by May 15). Reforestation activities and their associated results are audited annually by AF and this information is used to ensure that forestry activities are conducted in a sustainable manner and in compliance with legislation.

The Dry and Central Mixedwood subregions cover nearly 40 per cent of the province and are dominated by aspen, with jack pine on coarse textured soils, and black spruce, willows, and sedges in the poorly drained areas. The vegetative communities in these subregions are important because they provide summer range for livestock, prime habitat for many species of wildlife, productive watersheds, recreational areas and timber production. As a result guides like this were developed to provide a framework that will easily group the vegetative community types. It is hoped these classification systems can be used by resource managers to assess the ecology of the sites and develop integrated management plans within each region. This guide represents the analysis of 1110 plots described within the Dry Mixedwood subregion. The dominant plant species, canopy cover, soils and environmental conditions are outlined for each type.
