Description

The Scaling Standards of Alberta provides the standards of measurement used to determine the quantity and quality of timber harvested in Alberta. In addition, the standards provide information about compiling and reporting harvest data and describes non-standard scale methods used to estimate volumes of decked and stacked timber. These standards are authorized and posted under sections 2(1) and 2(2) of the Forests (Ministerial) Regulation, pursuant to Section 5(e) of the Forests Act.

The seed testing standards described are closely aligned with the International Rules for Seed Testing 2015 (ISTA 2015) and follow these procedures for sampling, moisture content determination, purity analysis, and seed weight determination.

The forest genetic resources of Alberta are crucial to the long-term economic and ecological stability of the province. Without proper management, human activity can lead to genetic erosion, reduced fitness and loss of evolutionary resilience in wild populations, and can also reduce opportunities for development of new and useful plant varieties and gene products.
