Description

The purpose of the Alberta Scaling Permitting Program is primarily to provide the ground rules under which the training and permitting of timber scalers shall occur in Alberta. Timber scaling is conducted for the purpose of providing harvest information to the department of Agriculture and Forestry, and must be done by a person holding a valid scaler's permit. In addition, a valid scaler's permit is also required for any person conducting check scaling on behalf of Agriculture and Forestry. This document defines the requirements for course instructors, course content and duration, obtaining and retaining a scalers permit, and examination procedures.

Timber scaling is the measurement of harvested timber to determine its net roundwood or product volume. It is used to assess crown timber charges and ensure the sustainability of the timber resource by determining the harvested volume in relation to the annual allowable cut. Timber scaling must be done by a person holding a valid Scaler's Permit. This policy is written in accordance with the Timber Management Regulation and the Scaling Regulation and is intended primarily to provide the ground rules under which the training and permitting of timber scalers shall occur in Alberta. This document will further define the requirements for course instructors, course content and duration, obtaining and retaining a scalers permit, and examination procedures.

Crown forest management plans (FMPs) detail when, where and how timber on Alberta Crown land will be managed in order to balance social, economic and environmental needs based on input from the public, Indigenous peoples and interest groups. A component of a FMP called a timber supply analysis (TSA) was prepared by the Government of Alberta. The TSA covers Forest Management Unit (FMU) S10, a Crown managed unit located in northern Alberta within the Central Mixedwood and Lower Boreal Highlands Natural Subregions.
